Premium rugs – the art of knotting from the Orient

Immerse yourself in the world of the most exclusive premium rugs and discover the masterpieces of the Orient. Every pattern resembles a painting and is unique in itself. The pattern is the most important feature of a premium rug: it unites the tradition of the knotting province with the passion of the knotter. A rug from the Orient therefore embodies the soul of the knotter and the norms and values of the province. A knotter spends up to four years on a single piece. The knotters receive a design template typical of the province, which they follow. This design template is usually used only once and then varied. In the countryside, by contrast, nomads knot nomadic rugs without a template, yet the designs of neighbouring villages resemble one another. In these cases the rugs are similar in colour and pattern.

Conventional premium rugs are hand-knotted and come mainly from the ancient Orient. In many production locations, making premium rugs is the livelihood of the knotters and everyone else involved. Suppliers and producers located close to one another allow shorter delivery routes and faster production. This regional network is kept alive by being passed down through the generations.

Which types of rug count as premium rugs?

Ghom rugs, Hereke silk rugs, Isfahan, Nain 6La or 4La, as well as rugs from Tabriz and Kashmir silk are among the finest premium-quality rugs in the world.

Rug material – the advantages of natural fibres

Classic premium rugs are usually made from natural fibres. Natural fibres are divided into plant and animal fibres. In the vast majority of cases, virgin wool is used, supplied from production sites nearby. This benefits everyone involved in the region. The virgin wool used is odour-neutral and has a high lanolin content. This makes the rugs hard-wearing and durable. The natural fibres used help create a balanced indoor climate and can also be combined with underfloor heating. Besides virgin wool, other natural yarns such as Kork wool, cotton or silk are also used.

Rug colours – the transformation of colours

A premium rug is rich in colours and nuances. Colourful rugs in shades such as green, red, blue or yellow suit almost any interior, whether classic and oriental or modern and understated.

Handmade rugs need to be exposed to the sun for over a month in order to fade sufficiently. This time is usually not observed in the supply chain, which is why it is no surprise that rugs fade in your home. To ensure even fading, the rug should be turned every two years. In individual cases, the rug only reaches its final colour after ten years.

Handmade rugs come in all conventional shapes. Rectangular rugs are the most common. Two variants of rectangular rugs are square rugs and long, narrow rugs, the so-called “runners”. Round rugs and oval rugs, on the other hand, are much rarer.

Rug patterns – true to detail and unique

The patterns reveal the precise craftsmanship of the rug knotters. It is the careful handwork that makes a premium rug so valuable. Every pattern is unique in itself, and yet there are family resemblances within a rug family. With the variety of their colours and patterns, premium rugs make simple, modern interiors livelier and create a cosier atmosphere.

Living – rugs enrich every home

Premium rugs look good in any room. Their timeless oriental design outlasts the trends of every era. They can be laid in almost any room, whether in a bright living room or a cosy bedroom. Even stains do them little harm: the fantastic patterns make smaller stains virtually invisible. Unlike coarse high-pile rugs such as shaggy rugs, premium rugs are very fine and short-piled. This means they can also be hung on your walls as treasured pieces.

Bring oriental culture into your home and appreciate the creativity and the years of diligent work of the knotters.

Premium rugs are an investment in the future. Do not be put off by high costs. Classic premium rugs repay their cost through their long lifespan. With regular care and cleaning, they can be passed down through generations. They are also relatively stable in price and lose little value.
