Malayer rugs are among the most characterful representatives of Persian knotting art and have been a valued part of our range at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. These traditional Persian rugs convince through their robust construction and their typical geometric pattern elements, which clearly distinguish them from other Persian rug styles.
The town of Malayer lies in the Iranian province of Hamadan, about 80 kilometres south-east of the eponymous provincial capital. This region has been known for its rug knotting for centuries and has a long tradition of producing robust, everyday-suitable rugs. Malayer historically functioned as an important trading place where rugs from various surrounding villages were collected and resold.
The knotting tradition in Malayer developed particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries into a distinct stylistic direction. While many Persian rugs are characterised by floral ornaments, the knotters in Malayer concentrated on geometric designs that were both practical and aesthetically appealing. This focus on geometry reflects the nomadic influences of the region.
Malayer rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns, often dominated by a central medallion. Typical features include diamond-shaped ornaments, stylised blossom motifs and repeating border designs. The colour palette traditionally moves in warm earth tones: rust red, dark blue, beige and brown form the basis, complemented by accents in black or white.
Particularly characteristic for Ardakan rugs and Malayer pieces are the so-called Herati patterns, consisting of a central diamond with four curving leaves to the sides. These designs lend the rugs their unmistakable appearance and clearly distinguish them from the floral patterns of other Persian regions such as Moud rugs.
Malayer rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool, with warp and weft mostly made of cotton. The wool used often comes from local flocks and is carefully sorted before processing. The Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) is the preferred knotting technique, which gives the rugs their characteristic firmness and durability.
The knot density typically lies between 100,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre, making Malayer rugs robust, long-lived floor coverings. This medium to good knot density makes it possible to render the geometric patterns clearly and precisely without making the production time excessively long. Similar quality standards are also found in Ghoutshan rugs.
Malayer rugs are excellent for living areas that demand both style and hard-wearing nature. Their earthy tones fit harmoniously into both classic and modern interiors, while the geometric patterns set interesting accents. They come into their own particularly well in living rooms, dining rooms or hallways and resemble Golpayegan rugs in their versatility.
Care of Malayer rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning are enough to preserve their beauty for decades. Their robust construction makes them particularly resistant to everyday wear, which is why they can also be used in heavily frequented areas.
