Loribaft Rugs

The Loribaft rug is a refined and more sophisticated development of the classic Gabbeh. It is traditionally made by the Luri tribes with a significantly higher knot density, giving it a denser structure, a lower pile, and a more precise appearance. At Morgenland Carpets, we present unique Loribaft carpets that are hand-knotted from the finest highland wool and captivate with their silky sheen. The patterns are often simple and modern, with subtle color gradients (abrash) lending the carpet a lively dynamism. A Loribaft combines the original power of nomadic art with an elegance that makes it the ideal companion for high-quality designer furniture. It is durable, easy to care for, and represents a harmonious symbiosis of tradition and contemporary living style.

Give your home that special something with a Loribaft rug

Loribaft rugs belong to the Rizbaft group of rugs. With their extremely fine and tight weave, they are considered the high-end version of Gabbeh rugs.
Making one therefore takes 5 to 6 times longer than a normal Gabbeh rug. The Gabbeh pattern is typical of the nomads of southern Persia and somewhat more traditional than that of Loribaft rugs.

What makes Loribaft rugs so unique?

The best-known nomadic rugs from Iran are Gabbeh rugs. Traditionally they are knotted by the nomads of the Qashqai tribe in the province of Fars. Originally the nomads used these soft rugs as floor coverings and as sleeping mats.
Although Loribafts belong to the Gabbeh family, their extremely fine and much denser weave gives them the highest level of quality. Translated, Loribaft means “knotted by the Lori tribe”.

As with the classic Gabbeh, two different threads are twisted together and tied with Ghiordes and Senneh knots. While the knot density of very coarse Gabbeh rugs is often below 70,000 knots per square metre, a finely woven Loribaft reaches 250,000 knots and more.

At Morgenland we attach great importance to quality. That is why we produce our Loribaft rugs with around 160,000 to 202,500 knots per square metre.

Only hand-spun, high-quality sheep's wool is used for the pile of Loribaft rugs. Natural plant dyes produce beautiful natural shades. As is usual with genuine nomadic rugs, the warp and weft are also made of wool. Indian manufacturers are fond of imitating the stylish Persian models to an excellent standard and offer an attractively priced alternative. Indian Loribafts are also characterised by high quality and softness and are just as robust and durable.

What makes a Loribaft rug special?

What is special about the Loribaft rug is undoubtedly that it combines traditional Persian nomadic patterns with a very high degree of weaving fineness that we do not normally find in nomadic rugs.

It also has a rather unusual fringe finish that other Persian rugs do not usually have. The fringes of a Loribaft are finished as kilim ends.

The fine weave of the Loribaft Gabbeh shows the smallest details and, despite the finest materials, makes the rug extremely robust and therefore hard-wearing. The high-quality wool and elaborate handwork give it a unique feel and look.

How do you recognise a Loribaft?

It has modern patterns and is made from high-sheen wool. This distinguishes it from classic Persian rugs. Its designs are characterised by highly stylised pattern elements that come from the tradition of Persian nomadic rugs. Its rather subtle colouring suits any style of interior.

Genuine Loribaft rugs and their patterns and colours

The patterns of nomadic rugs are generally rather simple and not very detailed. They often show landscapes and the flora and fauna that surround the nomads' lives.
The finer weaving, however, allows Loribafts to achieve a much finer pattern. Colourful geometric patterns adapted to European taste are now also available. Plain and single-coloured designs are also very popular.

The colour palette of genuine Loribafts is very nuanced and ranges from natural grey, brown and cream tones to strong blue, yellow and green and the typical Loribaft red.

It also looks very elegant in brilliant white or extravagant black. All the tones look very natural and never garish.

They are particularly popular because they skilfully combine the stylised pattern elements of classic nomadic rugs with considerably finer weaving.

Our range includes various Loribaft rugs, including the popular Ziegler rugs. A Ziegler rug is a special version of the Loribaft rug that impresses with its characteristic patterns and colours. Whether in a size of 250 x 350 cm or 200 x 300 cm, Ziegler rugs lend your room timeless elegance.

Caring for Loribaft rugs properly

  • To remove dust and dirt from Loribaft rugs, regular vacuuming with a standard vacuum cleaner is recommended.
  • Vacuum on a lower setting to protect the pile and prevent it from looking dull.
  • Turn the rug regularly by 90 or 180 degrees to avoid uneven wear.
  • Avoid direct sunlight on the rug to prevent fading.
  • Use warm water and a woollen cloth to dab small stains. Avoid cleaning agents when doing so.
  • For heavy soiling, commission a rug cleaning specialist for a thorough clean.

A genuine Loribaft rug for every interior style

Anyone who decides to buy a Loribaft rug is choosing oriental tradition and craftsmanship. They are handmade one-of-a-kind pieces. The combination of high-quality materials and very fine weaving gives every room stylish elegance and a touch of exclusivity.

They are extremely soft yet robust, hard-wearing and heat-insulating. These properties make a Loribaft the perfect rug for rooms with a lot of foot traffic.

With strong colours and heat-insulating properties, they integrate perfectly into any living concept and interior style. Anyone who likes to walk barefoot or without shoes feels particularly comfortable on a Loribaft. Children also love playing on this soft, warm and robust rug.

Loribaft rugs — real comfort for your home

Hand-knotted Loribafts are among the most popular oriental rugs and have been in great demand for years. Besides their design, this is due to the excellent new wool, the simple patterns, the strong, bright colours and their resilience in everyday life.

Their tradition goes back a long way; it probably existed many centuries ago. The design has changed over time, making the patterns somewhat sparer with a reduced play of colour. A number of manufacturers in India now also produce high-quality Loribaft rugs.

Loribaft rugs combine tradition and stylish elegance

You can buy high-quality Loribaft rugs at Morgenland. Because of their much finer weaving, the production numbers of genuine Loribaft rugs are well below those of classic Gabbeh rugs. Whenever small quantities meet rising demand, the result is products that justify a higher price segment.

Our range offers you a large selection of shapes, colours and different designs. Round and oval shapes are rarely found. Loribaft high-pile rugs are high-quality natural products of timeless elegance.
