Kelim Fars rugs are among the prized flatweaves from the Persian province of Fars in southern Iran. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a select collection of these traditional kelims since 1977, convincing through their characteristic weaving technique and authentic designs. These hand-woven rugs combine centuries-old craft tradition with practical versatility.

Origin and history of Kelim Fars rugs

The province of Fars in southern Iran is considered a historic centre of Persian culture and is home to important cities such as Shiraz. This region has produced high-quality textiles for centuries, with kelim weaving developing into an independent art form. Fars Kelims are made in various centres of the province, with each region cultivating its specific pattern traditions.

The nomadic and settled peoples of the Fars region have refined the techniques of kelim production over generations. These flatweaves originally served as practical floor coverings, wall hangings and partition walls in the tents and houses of the inhabitants. The patterns and colours often reflect the natural surroundings and cultural influences of the region.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Kelim Fars rugs are distinguished by geometric patterning composed in clear, symmetrical arrangements. Typical designs include diamonds, hexagons, stylised animal figures and plant motifs. The colour palette ranges from warm earth tones to powerful red, blue and orange tones, with natural dyes traditionally used.

A characteristic feature is the so-called slit technique, in which colour changes are created by small slits in the weave. This technique gives the rugs their typical flat structure and allows sharp contours between different colour areas. Many Fars Kelims also show elaborate borders that frame the central pattern field.

Material and knotting technique

Kelim Fars rugs are traditionally woven from high-quality sheep's wool, prized for its hard-wearing nature and natural properties. The wool is hand-spun and dyed with natural or high-quality synthetic dyes. The kelim technique is a flat weave in which warp and weft threads are interwoven without knots being formed.

This weaving technique requires special skills, since the weavers must simultaneously develop the pattern and ensure the structural integrity of the weave. The density of the weave varies depending on the region and intended use, with high-quality Fars Kelims being characterised by an even, firm woven structure.

Interior styling and care

Kelim Fars rugs are excellent for various living areas, from living rooms through bedrooms to hallways. Their flat structure makes them particularly practical for areas with frequent through-traffic or under low furniture. The geometric patterns fit into both traditional and modern interior styles.

Care requires regular vacuuming and occasional turning to ensure even wear. For heavier soiling a professional rug cleaning is recommended. Thanks to their robust construction, Kelim Fars rugs have a long service life when properly cared for.
