Caramel Rugs

Caramel is a warm, slightly reddish light brown. Almost all our caramel rugs are Oriental rugs, many of them finely knotted Tabriz and Ziegler rugs, plus a few modern Gabbeh rugs.

Caramel rugs in the room

Caramel looks sweet, warm and inviting. The colour lies between beige and brown and has a slight red tinge that makes it livelier than a neutral brown. A caramel rug brings cosiness to any room and combines well with wood, linen and terracotta.

In the hallway

More than one in four caramel rugs is a runner, many of them three to four metres long. This makes them suitable for long hallways and landings too, where the warm colour accompanies the way through the house in a friendly manner. You will find more runners in many colours among the hallway rugs.

In the living room

In the living room, caramel goes with sofas in cream, grey or dark green and with furniture in oak or walnut. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 250 x 300 cm bring the seating group together. Our living room rugs show interior ideas for this room.

Which caramel rugs does Morgenland offer?

Nine out of ten caramel rugs show classic Oriental patterns. Just under two thirds come from Persia, a quarter from Afghanistan and the rest from India. Most are hand-knotted, some hand-woven. Kork wool is used strikingly often alongside virgin wool, giving the rugs a soft feel. Modern rugs in caramel are rarer: simple Gabbeh and Loribaft designs from India.

Tabriz in high fineness

A third of the designs are Tabriz rugs, many of them in the 50 and 60 Raj qualities. The high knot density allows particularly finely drawn medallions and floral tendrils, in which caramel interacts with cream, rosé and blue. They are joined by individual rugs from Rafsanjan and kilims with a share of silk.

Ziegler and Ariana from Afghanistan

Ziegler rugs with generous tendrils and Ariana rugs with muted, natural-looking colours come from Afghanistan. They look calmer than the finely patterned Persian rugs and suit modern rooms well. You will find more designs of this origin under Afghan Rugs.

Sizes and shapes

A good two thirds of the caramel rugs are rectangular, and more than a quarter are runners. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 150 x 200 cm and 170 x 240 cm, and for small spaces 60 x 90 cm.

Which colours go with caramel?

  • Cream and vanilla for a soft, light effect.
  • Dark green and petrol as a rich contrast.
  • Terracotta and brick for a warm, Mediterranean mood.
  • Grey and anthracite, which balance the warmth.
  • Rattan and wicker as natural companions.

Frequently asked questions about caramel rugs

What does 60 Raj mean?

Raj is a measure of the knot density of Tabriz rugs. 60 Raj stands for very fine knotting with particularly detailed patterns, 50 Raj for a slightly coarser, likewise high-quality grade.

What is a silk kilim?

A silk kilim is a flat-woven rug in which silk is also used. This makes the patterns look finer and gives them an elegant sheen. Silk kilims are thin and light and suit rooms with little foot traffic.

Caramel or camel?

Caramel is warmer and redder, camel more golden and a little lighter. You will find modern, simple designs in camel among the camel rugs.

Does caramel go with white furniture?

Very well. White makes the warm tone look fresher, and caramel takes the severity out of a white interior. For even more brightness, it is worth looking at the light brown rugs.
