Indo Tabriz rugs combine the classic Persian design tradition with Indian knotting craft and so create unique masterpieces for discerning living spaces. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found an exquisite selection of hand-knotted Indo Tabriz rugs in various sizes and quality levels since 1977. Our collection comprises both traditional and modern interpretations of this sought-after type of rug.
Indo Tabriz rugs arose from the combination of the centuries-old knotting tradition of Tabriz in north-western Iran with the craft expertise of Indian rug knotters. Tabriz is considered one of the most important rug regions of Persia, with a knotting art reaching back to the 16th century. The city was an important hub of the Silk Road and a centre of the Persian rug trade.
Indian manufactories began in the 20th century to interpret the classic Tabriz designs while bringing in their own technical skills. These Indo Tabriz rugs are produced mainly in the rug centres of northern India, where experienced knotters render the Persian templates with great precision. The result are rugs that preserve the aesthetics of the Persian originals while often showing an even finer knot density.
Indo Tabriz rugs are distinguished by their geometric-floral patterns, which often show a central medallion with surrounding corner panels. Also typical are the Herati pattern with its characteristic fish forms and palmettes and the Shah Abbas palmette design. The borders are usually multi-tiered and show complex ornaments that elegantly frame the main field.
The colour palette ranges from classic earthy tones such as red, blue and beige through to more modern interpretations in greys and beiges. Indo Tabriz rugs are particularly valued for their balanced colour harmony, achieved through the use of high-quality dyes. The patterns are precisely knotted and often show impressive detail accuracy, which on closer inspection reveals fine nuances and shadings.
High-grade Indo Tabriz rugs are knotted from pure virgin wool, with silk also used for particularly special pieces. The wool mostly comes from the highlands of India and is distinguished by its firmness and natural sheen. The warp usually consists of cotton, which lends the rug stability and enables an even knotted appearance.
The knot density for quality Indo Tabriz lies between 250,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre. The Persian Senneh knot is used, enabling particularly precise execution of the patterns. This high knot density gives the rugs their characteristic firmness and ensures a long service life. After knotting the rugs are carefully shorn and washed to give the pile an even appearance.
Indo Tabriz rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms or studies. Their classic elegance harmonises with both traditional and modern interior styles. Thanks to their robust nature they are also suitable for more frequented areas and develop a beautiful patina over the years.
Care is limited to regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional rotation of the rug. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. With the right care Indo Tabriz rugs retain their beauty for decades and may even gain in value. Direct sunlight should be avoided in order to protect the colours.
