The town of Hereke lies about 60 kilometres east of Istanbul on the Sea of Marmara and looks back on a centuries-old tradition of rug production. Its heyday began in the 19th century, when Sultan Abdülmecid I founded an imperial rug manufactory in 1843. This manufactory was to produce rugs for the palaces of the Ottoman Empire and as state gifts for foreign dignitaries.
The weavers of Hereke developed unique techniques and achieved knot densities that remain unsurpassed to this day. After the end of the Ottoman Empire, private manufactories continued the tradition and established Hereke as a byword for the highest rug quality. The strict quality standards and exceptional craftsmanship make every authentic Hereke rug a rare collector's piece.
Hereke rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally detailed and symmetrical patterns. Classic designs include the famous Hereke medallion, floral ornaments with roses and carnations, and traditional Ottoman court motifs. Particularly characteristic are the extremely delicate borders with several nested frames, requiring the highest knotting precision.
The colour palette ranges from warm earth tones such as beige, cream and gold to strong reds, blues and greens. Many Hereke rugs use a reduced number of colours to emphasise the elegance of the pattern composition. Silk Hereke pieces shimmer depending on the angle of the light and give the patterns a vivid depth not achieved by other rug types.
Authentic Hereke rugs are knotted exclusively from high-grade virgin wool or pure silk, with the silk versions considered the absolute pinnacle of quality. The silk used traditionally comes from Bursa and is distinguished by its natural lustre and firmness. Wool rugs use only hand-spun highland wool, known for its longevity and silky handle.
The knot density of Hereke rugs is legendary and can exceed 1 million knots per square metre in silk rugs. The symmetric Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) is used, knotted with the utmost precision. A single Hereke rug requires several years of work, which explains the high prices and rarity of these rugs.
Hereke rugs are particularly suited to representative rooms such as living rooms, libraries or dining rooms, where they can function as a central design element. Because of their preciousness they are often displayed on walls as tapestries or laid in less heavily used areas. Their timeless elegance harmonises with both classic and modern interior styles.
Care requires special attention and should ideally be carried out by a professional rug cleaning. Regular careful vacuuming and protection from direct sunlight are essential. With appropriate treatment, Hereke rugs can last for several generations and even gain in value.
