Farahan rugs are among the most precious treasures of Persian rug art and have always stood for exceptional quality and artistic workmanship. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have carried a carefully selected collection of these noble knotted works from the Farahan region in central Persia since 1977. Our expertise enables us to offer you authentic Farahan rugs in various sizes and designs.
The Farahan region lies south-west of Tehran in the Iranian province of Markazi and has been known for its high-quality rugs since the 19th century. Rug knotting in Farahan reached its heyday in the second half of the 19th century, when European traders discovered the exceptional quality of the rugs knotted there. The Farahan knotters developed their own unmistakable style, distinguished by its technical perfection and harmonious colour combinations.
Historically, Farahan rugs were produced mainly for export to Europe, which explains the high quality standards and the adaptation to Western European tastes. The tradition of rug knotting has been passed on from masters to their pupils over generations, by which the characteristic appearance and technical excellence have been preserved to this day.
Farahan rugs are distinguished by their particularly dense and even knotting, which enables fine pattern details. Characteristic are the geometric and floral motifs, which often appear in the form of Herati patterns, rosettes or stylised palmettes. The borders are usually executed in multiple bands and show complex, repeating ornaments. Also typical of Farahan rugs is the frequently used central medallion, surrounded by fine vines and blossom motifs.
The colour palette of Farahan rugs is marked by muted, harmonious tones. Deep blue, warm red, ivory and various brown tones dominate, complemented by discreet accents in green or gold. This restrained colour scheme gives the rugs their timeless elegance and makes them versatile furnishings that fit harmoniously into a range of interior styles.
Authentic Farahan rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep on the Iranian highlands. This wool is distinguished by its natural sheen and hard-wearing nature. The pile is knotted onto a robust cotton warp, which gives the rug stability and shape. The knot density typically lies between 200,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, with particularly fine pieces reaching even higher values.
The traditional Persian knot (Senneh knot) is used, producing a particularly dense and even surface. Dyeing is done with natural dyes such as madder for reds, indigo for blues and various plant extracts for other colour nuances. This traditional dyeing technique ensures the lightfastness and colour stability of the rugs for decades.
Farahan rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms or libraries. Their restrained colour scheme and the classic patterns suit both traditional and modern interior styles. Particularly in combination with antique furniture or in rooms with high ceilings, the noble proportions and the fine pattern come into their own. Ardakan rugs and Moud rugs, which also come from the central region of Iran, are similarly valued.
Care of a Farahan rug requires regular but gentle vacuuming in the direction of the pile. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning, which treats the precious materials gently and preserves service life. With proper treatment these rugs can easily last several generations and often gain in beauty and value with age. Further high-quality Persian weavings can be found in our collection of Persian rugs.
