Dark blue is the classic ground colour of the Persian rug. Here you will find hand-knotted Oriental rugs such as Nain, Tabriz and Mashhad, as well as modern Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs.

A dark blue rug anchors a room. The colour feels calm and refined, yet it does not swallow the light as long as pale walls and furniture offset it. With Oriental rugs there is a further point: dark blue rarely appears on its own. Red, ivory and gold in the pattern break up the surface and tie the rug to the other colours in your interior.
Under a light-coloured seating group, a dark blue rug creates a clear frame. Large sizes from 200 x 300 cm bring the sofa, armchairs and coffee table together into one zone, and a central medallion draws attention to the coffee table. You will find more ideas among our living room rugs.
In the bedroom, dark blue has a calming effect, especially with white bed linen and light wood. Dark blue runners suit the hallway: just under a fifth of our dark blue rugs come in runner format, and the dark ground colour makes everyday marks less noticeable. We also show suitable designs under Hallway Rugs.
Almost all our dark blue rugs are hand-knotted, and the great majority of them are Persian rugs. They are joined by individual pieces from Afghanistan and India and a few modern designs. The modern rugs in dark blue are mainly Persian Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs, plus designer pieces and modern kilims with minimalist patterns, narrow borders or no pattern at all. They add a calm, contemporary option to the classic Oriental rugs.
Most designs come from well-known Persian rug-making centres. Nain rugs often combine a deep blue with ivory; the designation 6la or 9la describes the fineness of the knotting, with 6la being the finer of the two. On Tabriz rugs, the Raj number indicates the knot density. Mashhad rugs with generous medallions and the particularly densely knotted Bidjar complete the selection.
More than half of the rugs feature a medallion, and many others an all-over field or floral motifs. They are knotted mainly from virgin wool and kork wool, a particularly soft wool from the neck and shoulders of the sheep. On many high-quality pieces, silk outlines add fine highlights. You will find a selection of rugs with a high silk content under Silk Rugs.
Most dark blue rugs are rectangular. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 150 x 200 cm and 170 x 240 cm, and for smaller rooms also 100 x 150 cm and 60 x 90 cm. Runners come in many lengths, mostly between two and three metres. Square rugs are rare, and round ones are the exception.
Yes. Against simple, light-coloured furniture in particular, a classic pattern in dark blue works as a deliberate contrast. If you prefer a quieter look, choose a design with a finely patterned all-over field instead of a large medallion.
That depends on the pattern. Many Persian rugs alternate dark and light areas, such as a dark blue field with a light border. A high proportion of ivory and cream keeps small rooms bright, while a field that is dark throughout shows to best advantage in large, light-filled rooms.
