Colourful Rugs

Colourful rugs bring colour and joie de vivre to any room. Most are modern rugs, above all hand-woven kilims from Maimana in Afghanistan, plus a few Oriental rugs from Persia.

Colourful rugs in the room

Colourful rugs set the mood. They bring colour to plain rooms, connect different pieces of furniture and accessories and make an interior more personal. In rooms with white walls and neutral furniture in particular, a colourful rug becomes the centrepiece that catches the eye at once. At the same time it can bring together the different colours of an interior, for example furniture from different periods.

In the living room

In the living room, a colourful rug looks best under a calm sofa in grey, beige or white. The 170 x 240 cm size is the most common in our range and suits most seating areas, and for large rooms there are also 250 x 300 cm and 250 x 350 cm. You will find more ideas for living among the Living Room Rugs.

In the bedroom and the dining room

In the bedroom, a colourful rug beside or under the bed adds a cheerful accent to plain bed linen. Under the dining table, kilims hold the table and chairs together, and because they are flat-woven, the chairs slide easily.

Which colourful rugs does Morgenland offer?

By far the largest part of our colourful rugs are kilims from Afghanistan. They are joined by modern wool rugs from India, a few designer and children’s rugs and a handful of pieces from Persia and Nepal. Virgin wool is the material in nearly every one of them. The kilims from Maimana and the wool rugs count among our modern rugs; alongside them you will find a few Oriental rugs, such as Bidjar and Bakhtiari rugs from Persia and classic kilims.

Kilims from Maimana

The kilims come from the region around Maimana in northern Afghanistan. They are flat-woven by hand and show nomadic patterns of diamonds, hooks and stripes in many colours. Many are reversible and can be turned over. You will find more pieces under Kilim Rugs and among the Afghan Rugs.

Modern wool rugs

The wool rugs from India show colour in abstract shapes, mosaics and ornaments, often inspired by Morocco and the Orient. They are hand-tufted or woven and suit contemporary interiors. We show more designs under Modern rugs and Designer Rugs.

Sizes and shapes

Almost all colourful rugs are rectangular. The most common size is 170 x 240 cm, followed by 150 x 200 cm, 100 x 150 cm, 120 x 180 cm and large sizes up to 300 x 400 cm. A few runners up to 200 cm long suit the hallway and the kitchen.

Which colours go with colourful rugs?

  • White and light grey, which give the colours room.
  • Beige and natural tones for a warm, calm frame.
  • One colour from the pattern for cushions or curtains.
  • Wood and rattan as a natural complement.
  • Black in small doses for graphic accents.

Frequently asked questions about colourful rugs

What is the difference between colourful and multicoloured?

Colourful means strong, cheerful colours placed deliberately side by side. Multicoloured is the broader term and also covers calm combinations such as black and white. We show the whole range under Multicoloured Rugs.

How do I combine a colourful rug without making the room look busy?

Keep walls and large pieces of furniture neutral and pick up one or two colours of the rug in small accessories. The room then looks lively but orderly.

Are kilims suitable for households with children?

Yes. Kilims are flat, sturdy and light, and many can be turned over. For the nursery you will also find colourful motifs under Children’s Rugs.

More understated but just as rich in contrast are the Black and White Rugs.
