Bidjar - Takab rugs are among the most robust and long-lived knotted works from Iran. In Hamburg, customers have relied on Morgenland Teppiche's expertise in selecting these exceptional rugs since 1977. The renowned rug house in the Speicherstadt offers a carefully curated collection of these special Persian weavings.
The town of Bidjar lies in the Iranian province of Kurdistan and is regarded as a centre for the production of particularly dense and heavy rugs. The region around Takab, located south of Bidjar, produces rugs in a similar tradition and quality. These Bidjar Takab rugs are often categorised together, since they show comparable properties and are sometimes made by the same families of weavers.
The knotting tradition in this region reaches back several centuries. Local craftsmen developed special techniques to create particularly dense and resistant rugs. These methods are still passed from generation to generation today. The geographical location between various cultural spheres influenced both the pattern language and the materials used.
Bidjar - Takab rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns and powerful colour combinations. Typical features include central medallions surrounded by richly detailed corner panels. Herati patterns, stylised palmettes and geometric borders are also frequently found. The colour palette comprises predominantly dark reds, deep blues and cream-coloured accents.
A characteristic feature is the use of abrash effects, in which slight colour variations occur within the same shades. These natural gradations lend the rugs vivacity and depth. The patterns are usually symmetrically composed and follow traditional templates that have been used in the region for centuries. Borchalou rugs and Garawan rugs from related knotting regions are particularly valued.
The rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from local sheep. The yarn is traditionally hand-spun and dyed with natural colours. The base material is usually cotton, more rarely wool. The knotting technique used is the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), which is particularly firm and durable.
Knot density typically lies between 150,000 and 300,000 knots per square metre. This high density, combined with the firm knot and compact workmanship, makes Bidjar - Takab rugs among the most robust of their kind. After knotting the rugs are shorn and given their characteristic even surface. Joshaghan rugs and Jozan rugs are made using similar techniques.
Because of their robustness, these rugs are particularly suited to heavily used areas such as entrance halls, living rooms or offices. The understated to powerful colour tones fit well into both classic and modern interior styles. Bidjar - Takab rugs develop a beautiful patina through use and become even more beautiful over time.
Care is limited to regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to the dense structure, these rugs dry more quickly after cleaning than other Oriental rugs. With proper treatment they can be used easily for several decades.
The Morgenland Teppiche range includes carefully selected Bidjar - Takab rugs in various sizes and patterns. Every rug is checked for quality and authenticity before sale. In the showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt interested customers can examine the rugs in person and receive expert advice.
