Origin and history of Bidjar - Bukan rugs

The town of Bidjar lies in the Iranian province of Kurdistan, about 90 kilometres south of the provincial capital Sanandaj. Bidjar Bukan rugs are knotted both in the eponymous town and in surrounding villages, with each region developing its own stylistic features. The knotting tradition in this area reaches back several centuries and is cultivated equally by Kurdish and Persian craftsmen.

Historically, the first Bidjar rugs appeared in the 18th century, with production reaching its heyday in the 19th century. The strategic location on important trade routes contributed to the dissemination and fame of these rugs. Today the traditional patterns and knotting techniques are passed from generation to generation, with modern influences enriching the classic designs.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Bidjar - Bukan rugs are known for their geometric patterns and powerful colours. Typical designs include the classic Herati pattern with its characteristic fish forms, floral medallion patterns and geometric borders. The colour palette ranges from deep reds and blues through beige and cream to green and gold accents. Particularly valued are the harmonious colour combinations achieved through the use of high-quality natural dyes.

Another characteristic feature is the exceptional density of the knotting, which produces an almost board-like stiffness. This property makes Bidjar rugs so robust that they are often called "iron rugs". The compact structure is created by a special technique in which the warp threads are tensioned strongly during knotting and the weft threads are firmly beaten down.

Material and knotting technique

High-quality Bidjar - Bukan rugs are knotted exclusively from hand-spun virgin wool, with silk used for detail on particularly special pieces. The warp is usually made of cotton or wool, while the knots are made exclusively of the finest highland wool. The knot density typically lies between 160,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, with finer pieces easily reaching higher densities.

The knotting technique used is the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), known for its stability. After knotting, the rugs are traditionally fulled and pressed, which gives them their characteristic firmness. This elaborate finishing contributes substantially to the legendary durability for which Borchalou rugs and other Kurdish weavings are also known.

Interior styling and care

Bidjar - Bukan rugs are excellent for heavily used areas such as living rooms, hallways or offices, since they withstand intensive use without problem. Their timeless patterns suit both classic and modern interior styles. They look particularly beautiful in combination with other Persian rugs or as solo pieces in minimalist rooms.

Care could not be easier: regular vacuuming is enough for daily cleaning. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their robust construction these rugs also tolerate more thorough treatment without difficulty. With proper care, Bidjar rugs can last for several generations and even gain in beauty, similar to high-quality Joshaghan rugs or Jozan rugs.
