Abadeh rugs are among the most esteemed knotted works from Iran and have delighted rug lovers worldwide for decades. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a carefully curated selection of these exceptional rugs since 1977, distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns and first-class workmanship. Our expertise enables us to source authentic Abadeh rugs of the highest quality directly from the workshops of the region.

Origin and history of Abadeh rugs

Abadeh is a town in the Iranian province of Fars, about 200 kilometres north-west of Shiraz. The region lies in a strategically favourable position on the historic trade route between Isfahan and Shiraz and has therefore integrated various cultural influences into its rug art. The knotting tradition in Abadeh developed particularly intensively in the 20th century, with weavers drawing inspiration both from the classic Persian rugs of the surrounding area and from the geometric designs of the nomadic tribes.

Rug production in Abadeh is closely connected to local family businesses where the craft is passed from generation to generation. This continuous tradition ensures not only the high quality of the rugs but also the preservation of authentic designs and knotting techniques. Many of the Abadeh rugs produced today still follow the traditional patterns developed decades ago.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Abadeh rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric designs, frequently dominated by a central medallion. Typical features include diamond-shaped or hexagonal medallions surrounded by stylised floral and leaf motifs. The borders often show complex geometric patterns with small-scale ornaments that frame the rug harmoniously. Particularly well known are the so-called "Zili Sultan" patterns with their characteristic vase and floral motifs.

The colour palette of Abadeh rugs is traditionally marked by warm reds skilfully combined with blue, beige and cream tones. This classic colour scheme makes them versatile furnishings that suit both traditional and modern living spaces. Similar colour harmonies are also found in Ardakan rugs and Moud rugs from the same region.

Material and knotting technique

The foundation of every Abadeh rug is a stable cotton warp onto which high-quality virgin wool is knotted. The wool used comes largely from local production and is distinguished by its firmness and natural sheen. Some particularly fine pieces also include silk accents, which highlight certain pattern elements and lend the rug additional lustre.

Knot density in Abadeh rugs typically lies between 150,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, using the Persian knot (Senneh knot). This density makes it possible to render even fine details of the geometric patterns precisely. The careful workmanship and the materials used make every Abadeh rug a long-lived companion that lasts decades with appropriate care.

Interior styling and care

Abadeh rugs are excellent for living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, where their warm colours and geometric patterns set accents. Their medium knot density makes them robust enough for daily use, while the traditional designs harmonise with both classic and modern furniture. They come into their own particularly well in rooms where their geometric patterns do not have to compete with too many other patterns.

Caring for Abadeh rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional rotation are usually enough. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning, which protects the precious fibres and preserves the colours. With proper treatment an Abadeh rug retains its beauty for many years and may even gain in value.
