How to remove hair dye from a rug

You have finally coloured your hair in exactly the right shade – and then a drop of dye lands on your beloved rug. Do not panic. Take a deep breath first. With the right products and a little patience, a hairy little stain accident like this can usually be brought under control. So: gloves on. Rubber gloves, to be precise. That protects your hands.

Take a clean sponge, dip it in cold water and dab the spot carefully. Please do not rub – that only makes the stain worse. If the hair dye has not gone from the rug, mix a solution of one tablespoon of washing-up liquid and one of white vinegar in a small bucket. Apply the solution directly to the stain with a cloth and leave it for five minutes. 
Still not satisfied? Then you can bring hydrogen peroxide into play. Take care, though, that the hydrogen peroxide does not come into direct contact with the dye, since it can change the colour of the rug. So go gently. After applying it, take another dry cloth and dab the stain.

If none of that helps, mix an ammonia cleaning solution: add a tablespoon of washing-up liquid and a tablespoon of ammonia to water. Remember to ventilate the area well, to avoid breathing in the fumes. Once you have applied the solution, dab the area with a wet sponge and let it dry for 24 hours.

Removing water-based paint stains from rugs is a difficult process, but not an impossible one. The first step is to clean the rug carefully, to lift the water and paint already sitting there. Start with a small amount of water, to soak the stain gently and loosen the paint. If the stain is still there, try a little soapy water or a mild cleaning product to remove it completely. After soaking and cleaning the stain with lukewarm water, rinse the rug carefully to make sure all traces of paint are gone. Let the rug dry well before using it again.
