Rugs and bedrooms: a happy match
A beautiful rug or runner in the bedroom does more than make getting up in the morning easier – it turns your sleeping quarters into a place of recovery and an oasis for quiet reflection.
As you make your bed, so you must lie in it
Sleep is the gateway to dreams, longings and the subconscious. So it can hardly hurt to make that crossing into another dimension as inviting as possible, can it? There are countless ways to transform a bedroom with the right rug and give it a character entirely your own. Take inspiration and create an island of calm.
Stimulate or soothe
Everyone has their own needs and their own temperament. The same is true of rugs and runners. Those fundamental differences show up first in the material, and in the texture that follows from it. Rugs made from natural or plant fibres such as sisal or jute work like a kind of acupressure for the soles of your feet. They bring you to life by sending small impulses into the muscles.
Wool floor coverings take the opposite approach. They relax and indulge weary soles with softness and warmth.
Rise and shine, or sleep on it
Tastes differ – to put it plainly. Some people want plenty of light in the eye first thing and then set straight off. For this mentally alert type, pale rugs are the recommendation; perhaps even entirely in white. They benefit most from the transcendent qualities of absolute light.
Others come round slowly and prefer it that way. For these archetypes, warmer and darker colours are the recommendation; browns in general, but also deep red, dark orange or the darker greens.
Neutral or bold
Neutral shades suit any interior. A rug in soft beige, grey or earth tones can act as a calming anchor in a room that is meant to radiate quiet, or in one where lively colours and patterns otherwise dominate. Neutral rugs lend a sense of openness and clarity, and make a room feel more spacious.
A bold rug, on the other hand, sits very well alongside objects in muted colours. If the furniture itself is already strongly coloured, the colours can easily end up clashing. So take care.
Plain or patterned
Plain rugs create calm and composure. They let the patterns of the decor take the lead. Anyone who wants their rug to bring some life to the design, though, has a choice of many different styles.
Geometric patterns, florals, ornamentation, stripes, classic or modern – the possibilities really are almost limitless. Vintage rugs are rightly sought after once again, because they carry many of the virtues already listed all at once.
The fixed points of a sleeping space
A rug or runner is more than decor – it invites you to experience the room anew, turning the bedroom into a quiet harbour where thoughts settle and the day fades gently away. Every step becomes a journey of discovery into a world of security, where comfort and beauty merge into an inseparable whole. Your private space becomes a refuge that gives you the feeling of home with every glance and every touch.
