Klardasht Rugs

Klardasht rugs are among the prized Persian village knotted works from the eponymous region south of Isfahan. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a select collection of these hand-knotted quality rugs since 1977, known for their geometric patterns and robust workmanship. Every Klardasht rug embodies the centuries-old knotting tradition of its region of origin and is excellent for daily use.

Origin and history of Klardasht rugs

The village community of Klardasht lies in Isfahan Province in the heart of Iran and has been known for its rug knotting for generations. The region benefits from the centuries-old weaving tradition of the surrounding areas, but has developed its own characteristic features. The knotters of Klardasht have refined their techniques over the years and integrated both traditional and modern influences into their works.

Historically, rug production in Klardasht developed in parallel with other important knotting centres of the region such as Joshaghan rugs and Borchalou rugs. The proximity to Isfahan, one of the most important trade centres for Oriental rugs, enabled the local knotters to bring their products to a wider market while at the same time benefiting from the region's high quality standards.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Klardasht rugs are distinguished by their geometric designs, which often combine floral elements with traditional Persian motifs. Typical are central medallions surrounded by symmetrical corner panels. The borders frequently show classic Persian vines or stylised blossom motifs. Characteristic for many Klardasht rugs is the use of palmettes and rosettes, which appear in both the main field and the borders.

The colour palette comprises traditional tones such as red, blue and beige, complemented by accent colours such as green or gold. This harmonious colour scheme makes Klardasht rugs versatile furnishings that integrate into both classic and modern interior concepts. Similar to Jozan rugs or Garawan rugs, the typical features of Persian village knotting are shown here.

Material and knotting technique

Most Klardasht rugs are knotted from high-quality virgin wool worked onto cotton warps. This combination of materials ensures both hard-wearing nature and flexibility. The wool used often comes from local production and is dyed with natural colours, contributing to the characteristic warm colour tones. Some high-quality examples can also feature silk accents that highlight particular pattern details.

The knot density typically lies between 100,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, using the Persian knot (Senneh knot). This medium to high knot density makes it possible to achieve both fine detail and robust quality. The careful workmanship and the use of proven knotting techniques make every Klardasht rug a long-lived floor covering for generations.

Interior styling and care

Owing to their robust workmanship, Klardasht rugs are particularly suited to living areas with normal to intensive use. They fit both traditionally furnished rooms and modern interior concepts and can function as the centrepiece of a room or as a harmonious complement to the existing furnishings. Their medium sizes make them ideal for living rooms, dining rooms or larger bedrooms.

Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional turning are enough for daily preservation. For heavier soiling a professional rug cleaning is recommended. Like all high-quality Persian rugs, Klardasht rugs also develop a beautiful patina over time and gain in character.

Klardasht rugs at Morgenland

In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a carefully selected collection of authentic Klardasht rugs. The carpets from northern Persia are usually available in strong, radiant colours such as red or blue. Their pile is very dense, which is made possible by the pure new wool and makes the carpets hard-wearing and durable. The stylish designs of Klardasht rugs are usually very traditional: They often consist of a hexagon framed by white lines with a scarab in the centre.
